"Hotel weddings Chicago" is the largest single city query in our keyword map, ahead of every other US city. Couples here are choosing between downtown ballrooms, river and lake views, and a ring of suburban hotels. The venues listed on this page are the Chicago hotels we hold verified details for. The notes below are what's worth knowing before you contact any of them.

City or suburbs: check which county the hotel is in

This is the one thing that catches Chicago couples out. A Cook County marriage license is only valid for a ceremony in Chicago or suburban Cook County. Chicago's suburbs spread across several counties, so a hotel you find by searching "hotel wedding venues Chicago suburbs" may sit outside Cook. If it's in one of the collar counties, you need that county's license, not Cook's.

Once issued, a Cook County license takes effect the day after issue and is valid for 60 days. So get it within the 60 days before your date, not earlier, and confirm the hotel's county before you book the appointment.

Getting guests in: two airports, both on the train

Chicago has two major airports. O'Hare is on the CTA Blue Line, which runs 24 hours, and Midway is on the Orange Line. That matters more for a hotel wedding than for most venue types, because your out-of-town guests are also your room block. A downtown hotel on or near a train line lets them land and arrive without a car, and a hotel near O'Hare shortens the trip for guests flying in. Either way, put the airport-to-hotel route on your wedding website, and ask the hotel whether it runs an airport shuttle before you pay for one. Our room block guide covers how many rooms to hold and what to negotiate.

Dates: season, weather and the convention calendar

October is the most popular wedding month in the Chicago area, followed by September, according to a local wedding photographer's analysis. Nationally, The Knot's Real Weddings Study has October and June tied as the most popular months, at 16% of weddings each. Winter is genuinely cold, with January averaging a high around freezing. That is exactly why a hotel works here: an indoor ballroom ceremony and reception with guests sleeping upstairs removes the weather problem entirely. If you're weighing a lake-view terrace, read what hotels actually offer indoors and out. A covered rain plan is the question to ask.

One Chicago-specific check: McCormick Place is the largest convention center in the country, and a citywide convention can fill downtown hotels. We haven't measured what that does to room-block rates, so we won't guess a figure. Look at the convention calendar before you fix a date, and ask the hotel directly whether your weekend overlaps a major event.
